Map knitter and plastic bottle crash cage rigs
I came across this webpage. Partly attracted to it as it makes a "crash proof rig" for phones. The video starts with the very likeable man dropping his SLR camera from 5ft in the "crash proof " rig. Gets your attention!

Could have done with on Dieppe beach!! The rig and camera were fine thanks to the legs of the BEAK taking the impact. This is a different and cheaper solution.
