Sisyphus of Karst

edited November 2023 in General

Wilhelm Putick / Viljem Putik, a Moravian karstologist and speleologist, was the main figure of the sisyphean efforts to turn Planina polje in Slovenia into an agricultural paradise.
.
He failed - one can't really fight karst and expect to win - but the beauty of the flooded karst plain would impress him for sure.
.
We flew a couple of kites above the newly-formed lake and captured some beautiful vistas. And the full story about Putik and Planina polje is on our website: https://kapjasa.si/en/sisyphus-of-karst/

  • Terrific photos of a very interesting man-made landscape

  • It's actually not man made - they tried to dry the plain first, then they tried to make the lake permanent, but both ideas failed - one can not tame this landscape ;-)

    For what it's worth: DECADES AGO people tried doing that to the Florida {USA} Everglades . FORTUNATELY, they were NOT completely successful.

    As far ask I know: It was once attempted to do the same to the Great Dismal Swamp in Northeast North Carolina and Southeast Virginia. {I live in N.E. NC,} However, that effort was also largely unsuccessful.

  • Inreresting story and beautiful photos.
    According to Google map, we were just a few kilometers from there, in Horjul this summer.

  • Stunning KAPtures. Love it. Glad most of the town and the church were above the water line.
    Keep the photos and stories coming!

  • @YvonH - cool! Horjul is an interesting choice ... you should've called us, we could fly kites together! ;-) ... next time!
    @Wind Watcher - thank you! :-)
